BBC Castaways spark bomb scare Members of the BBC's Castaway community on the Scottish island of Taransay have sparked a bomb scare - when they found an explosive device on the shoreline. A Royal Navy explosives team from Faslane on the west coast of Scotland was scrambled to deal with the device after the castaways raised the alert with Stornoway Coastguards via their emergency radio. The device on the beach turned out to be a distress flare which had only partly ignited, and could have been dangerous to anyone handling it. A search and rescue helicopter from Prestwick took Royal Navy explosives experts to Taransay to deal with the device, The Scotsman newspaper says. Petty Officer Alan Shaw, a member of the explosives team which covers the north of Scotland, said: "Firstly I had to identify the object, which was a smoke and flare widely used by ships, submarines and planes. "It had been partly detonated and therefore had the potential to explode and injure somebody." The team attached explosives to the flare and carried out a controlled detonation on the beach to destroy it.
