BBC try to stop return of cast-off Castaway

A rebellious cast-out star of the BBC's Castaway series has been banned from official ferries to the island, the show's producer said.

Jeremy Mills appealed to other boat operators not to take Ray Bowyer onto Taransay in the Western Isles. Mr Bowyer left the show in March after a row with the other castaways.

Mr Bowyer, from Manchester, returned to the Western Isles this week and told locals he planned a visit to the Castaway island.

He would give no clues as to exactly when he would cross the Sound of

Taransay from Harris to get to the island, but on Thursday said it would be "in the next few days".

Initially BBC bosses said Mr Bowyer's return to the island would be good television and he had a right to visit the island.

But in a change of heart, Mr Mills said: "Of course our official boat people do what we ask because they have a contract with us, but we cannot stop other boat crews from doing what they want to do.

"We just hope they will respect the privacy of the Castaways and the project."

Mr Bowyer is understood to still be on Lewis and Harris where he spent Thursday visiting people who helped him when he left the project and repaying money he borrowed from locals to pay for his trip back to the mainland.

The BBC shipped 36 men, women and children to the five-mile long island, west of Harris in the Outer Hebrides, on January 1. The castaways gave up their jobs and schooling to spend a year on the island where they have to survive on a strict budget and by cultivating the land and keeping and killing animals for food.
