Cast-off Castaway may return to island Castaways taking part in a fly-on-the wall documentary on a Scottish island are preparing for a possible visit from a rebellious former group member. Ray Bowyer, a builder from Greater Manchester, was asked to leave the Western Isles outpost in March after discussions with the rest of the community. But he has told listeners to local radio station Isles FM that he intends to re-visit Taransay and say hello to the participants of the programme Castaways. Mr Bowyer would give no clues as to exactly when he would cross the Sound of Taransay from Harris to get to the island. He visited people who helped him when he left the project and repaying money he borrowed from locals on Lewis and Harris to pay for his trip back to the mainland. Jeremy Mills, executive producer of programme makers Lion Television, said Mr Bowyer had not informed them of any plans to return to the scene of the programme. Mr Mills said: "It's nothing to do with us at all. Ray is an individual and what he does is up to him." But he admitted any return would make good television. He said that although Mr Bowyer had the same rights as anyone else in visiting Taransay, he would not be allowed to officially rejoin the project. The BBC shipped 36 men, women and children to the five-mile long island, west of Harris in the Outer Hebrides, on January 1 following an intensive selection process which attracted 4,000 hopefuls.
