THE SEARCH FOR THE PHONE!!

The makers of hit TV programme Big Brother say that no phone has been found in a search of the boys' bedroom which followed allegations that one of the contestants smuggled in a tiny mobile phone.

All 10 original housemates had been rigorously searched to ensure they had no means of contacting friends or viewers when they joined the hit TV and Internet experiment.

But according to the Sun, Nicholas Bateman, a 32-year-old stockbroker, may have sneaked in a tiny Motorola mobile phone at the start.

The story said an "associate" of Nick's rang in to allege the City trader was receiving daily reports from a friend about his fellow contestants' views and the way he is perceived by the viewing public.

Nicholas allegedly switches the phone, which he keeps inside his wash-bag, on to vibrate alert at 4am each day while lying beneath his bed covers. When it goes off, it is claimed he then listens intently to the latest report without speaking.

But a spokeswoman for the show says that a thorough search of the room where the men sleep had revealed no evidence of any technological skulduggery. She said: "Following the allegations made in a national newspaper, the Big Brother production team brought forward one of the weekly security checks. It has found no evidence that a contestant has smuggled a mobile phone into the house."

She added that as a precaution a telecommunications jammer was being fitted to the property so that no signals could be received in the area.

Since Big Brother went on air four weeks ago, Nicholas has become something of a cult TV villain in the eyes of many viewers, earning himself the nickname "Nasty Nick".

Thanks to 24-hour internet coverage of goings-on in the Big Brother house and weekday television highlights slots, addicts of the programme have seen him frequently playing his housemates off against each other.

Earlier this week, Nicholas was seen confessing he had lied to his housemates when he claimed early on in the nine-week experiment that his wife had been killed in a car crash.
